Human motivation is the most important link in regular sports and physical education. The purpose of this study is to summarize and structure information on the problem of formation of motivation for regular physical education among students in the Russian Federation. As a result of a survey of 112 students of the Moscow City Pedagogical University, the possibilities of organizing elective classes in physical culture and sports were identified that can meet the basic needs for physical activity, taking into account health-saving, competitive and recreational factors. The main reasons for the motives to start or continue the training process depend on the various list of personal incentives, goals and opportunities presented in the article.
