Objectification of judging in sports ballroom dancing: possible changes in evaluation criteria
Abstract and keywords
Abstract (English):
The article presents a study on judging in sports dancing. After conducting surveys and pedagogical observations, it was found that the current judging criteria and principles do not align with the objective assessment of dance proficiency. The following reasons were identified: the music accompaniment is often not specific to the dance, preventing judges and athletes from understanding and feeling it; judges are overloaded with a large set of evaluation criteria, making it physically impossible for them to assess each dance parameter accurately during intermediate stages; the presence of trained couples from their own and other clubs on the dance floor; the lack of clear criteria for evaluating the quality of each element's execution; and the possibility of blind spots where no judge is watching a specific pair of athletes during a certain period of time. The solution to the subjectivity of judging in sports ballroom dancing necessitates a qualitative change in both the overall competition system and its individual aspects.
