The purpose of the study is to analyze the anatomical and morphological characteristics of elite water polo players in relation to their playing position. Research methods and organization. The practical part of the study was carried out in the form of a pedagogical experiment, which included an extensive block of medical-physiological and pedagogical control tests. The experimental work was organized in the city of Volgograd and was based on the examination of a sample composed of qualified water polo players. Within this cohort, three positional groups were distinguished: central defenders, central attackers, and mid-zone athletes – midfielders, who are also mobile attackers. Research results and conclusions. It has been found that the distribution of anthropomorphic characteristics by playing position is not random: it is precisely the range of game tasks – from engaging in physical contests to constant movement across the field and active work at a high pace – that determines which body composition elements and which functional reserves are more pronounced in athletes of different roles.
