At the present stage of development, Paralympic sport is an integral part of physical culture and sports in the Russian Federation, but this has not always been the case. The first steps towards the formation of Paralympic sports were made 35 years ago, before that, at the official level, it was believed that there were no disabled people in our country (USSR) and there was simply no one to do sports! However, there were various all-Union societies uniting and supporting disabled people of a certain nosology. One of the leading such societies was the Allunion Society of the Blind, which actively developed sports activities among its members, which made it possible, when the opportunity arose, to respond most promptly to participation in the main competition for people with disabilities - the Paralympic Games. The purpose of the study is to present the main facts of the participation of athletes first in the USSR, then in the CIS, then in Russia at the first Paralympic Games for themselves. Athletes of our country took part in the Paralympic Games for the first time in 1988. It was the IV Winter Paralympic Games. Then, only athletes with visual impairment were included in the team performing under the Soviet flag. The Russian national team participated for the first time in 1994 in the VI Winter Paralympic Games. From the very first games for ourselves, our team was distinguished by the success of performances and thereby gave positive emotions to its compatriots during the most difficult period for the country. Among the most outstanding athletes of that time period, it is necessary to single out Rimma Batalova, Valery Kupchinsky, Tamara Pankova, Valery Il-yuchenko, Alexander Nasorulina and Lyubov Paninykh
