Introduction. Currently, there is a tendency to a deterioration in the physical training of students as a result of a decrease in motor activity. Students of the University of Physical Culture and Sports have a higher level of motor activity, which is due to regular purposeful physical culture and sports activities as part of the educational process and training activities. The purpose of the study: to identify trends in the special physical education of students as a result of mastering the discipline "Theory and methodology of teaching basic sports (athletics)" in the period from 2016 to 2022 academic years. Methods and organization of the study: a statistical analysis of the level of special physical fitness of students was completed. The data obtained were analyzed in comparison with the regulatory requirements of the discipline's work schedule. Discussion: as a result, the level of preparedness of students studying in the first year of the University of Physical Culture and Sports in the period from 2016 to 2022 was revealed. Women have a decrease in the level of special physical fitness, men have a wave-like change with an increase during the training period in 2021-22
