The article is devoted to the analysis of the historical development of sports management in Russia. The main stages of the evolution of management in sports are revealed, starting from the period of the reign of Peter I, who approved the state sports management bodies as the primary institutions of sports management. The socialist period is considered, during which the fundamental methodological developments in the field of management decisions in the sports industry were laid. An assessment is made of the impact of the transition of the economy to a market type of management on sports management. The analysis of the relationship of the current administrative-territorial structure of the state to the hierarchical structure of sports organizations is carried out. An analysis of the activities of a sports federation and a professional sports league is carried out in order to demonstrate the main functions and tasks of management
