By order of the Minister of Science and Higher Education No. 118 of February 24, 2021, a new scientific specialty was created in the nomenclature of scientific specialties of academic degrees - «Physical education and vocational physical training» (code 5.8.4.). The article analyzes the topics of doctoral and candidate dissertation from 2018 to 2022 on the issues of physical education of various groups of the population, professional and applied physical training of specialists whose activities are related to physical activity, in the scientific areas identified in the passport of this new scientific specialty. Scientific direction «Content, orientation and methods of physical education of children of preschool, school age and students» was the largest number of dissertations among all dissertations for the study period. There were fewer dissertations in two other areas of research: «Content, orientation, methods, methodics and technologies of professionally applied physical training in law enforcement agencies» and «Content, orientation, methods, methodics and technologies of professionally applied physical training in organizations of secondary vocational and higher education». For nine sections of the passport of the scientific specialty 5.8.4, a small number of dissertations were revealed. Comparative analysis of the dynamics of dissertation research topics in recent years on mass physical culture and professional physical training allows us to study modern trends in the development of sports science and plan further scientific research.
