The Paralympic Games at the present historical stage is a powerful global movement uniting the national Paralympic committees of more than 170 countries of the world. This movement was created and developed to the modern world level by the English doctor Ludwig Guttman. In the post-war period, he was the director of a military hospital where wounded British servicemen were treated. Guttman began to actively use systematic physical education classes for the rehabilitation of patients. Over time, these classes became much more than simple rehabilitation and began to have signs of systemic sports training. Guttman realized that rehabilitation with the help of sports has a huge effect, both for recovery and for improving the quality of life of patients. Therefore, he began to organize competitions accessible to people with various musculoskeletal disorders, most of which took place on the territory of his hospital located in the city of Stoke Mandeville. A powerful impetus for reaching a larger level was the possibility of holding exhibition archery competitions among wheelchair athletes immediately after the Olympic Games-1948 in the shooting complex of the Games. These competitions were later considered to be the first Stock Mandeville Games. Subsequently, until 1960, the Stoke-Mandeville Games began to be held annually and were organized in several sports at once. The Stoke-Mandeville Games can be considered a prototype of the modern Paralympic Games. This article examines the historical period from the emergence of the idea of creating world sports competitions for people with musculoskeletal disorders to the beginning of its implementation.
