We consider the possibility of determining the level of technical preparedness of chess players of top-level sports by computer analysis of chess games. This method is an important part of the sport training control system, making it possible to obtain a large volume of factual material on the current level of technical preparedness of an athlete. The use of a system of types and numbers of deviations from the best moves made in the course of a game as criteria for evaluating the technical preparedness of an athlete is substantiated. A comparison of levels of technical preparedness of chess players is carried out on the example of games in two major chess tournaments of different eras. In each Candidates Tournament (Budapest, 1950; Ekaterinburg, 2020-2021) the strongest players competing for a match against the world chess champion took part. Conclusions are made about the possibilities of interpretation of the factual material obtained by the method of computer analysis
