The article discusses issues of encouraging the working masses to engage in active motor activity based on attribute symbols (badges, tokens, etc.), an idea that emerged as early as the beginning of the 20th century. However, they were fully implemented only in the 1930s in the young Soviet republic and received a second breath in the first third of the current century. The purpose of the study is to present materials of a theoretical and retrospective analysis proving more than a century‑long history of the development of the attributes of the All-Russian Physical Culture and Sports Complex “Ready for Labor and Defense”. Research methods: theoretical analysis and generalization of scientific source. Research results and conclusions. The theoretical and retrospective analysis of the emergence of the GTO badge of the All-Russian Physical Culture and Sports Complex “Ready for Labor and Defense” testifies to more than a century‑long history of the formation of the idea of encouraging the working masses to engage in active motor activity. At the beginning of the 21st century, the GTO complex received a second breath and again began to serve for the benefit of the health of the Russian population.
