The relevance of the study is determined by the role and significance of mass in promoting health and increasing the duration and quality of life of the population. Mass sports also perform the most important socially significant social and cultural functions and create sustainable socio-economic effects. The purpose of the study is to identify the value potential of mass sports as an independent social institution. To achieve the goals of the study, the principles of systemic, structural-functional approaches, as well as general scientific methods of cognition were used. As a result of the study, the characteristic features, structural elements, universal and specific functions of mass sports were identified. Analysis of the main features and functions of social institutions made it possible to identify mass sports as a special social institution
