This article presents the results of an analysis of scientific and methodological literature related to approaches to sports selection. Different views on the process of forming the boundaries of the stages of sports selection have been revealed. According to some experts, sports selection should be considered in close connection with the multi-year stages of sports training, according to other experts - relatively independent or independent stages. At the same time, the general direction of the formation of the stages of sports selection was revealed. The differences are largely related to the clarification and detail of key positions
