The relevance of studying the social nature of sport is due to the need to include sports specifics in classical approaches to the analysis of social institutions. The authors have identified specific features of sports practices that make it possible to change approaches to the analysis of the social nature of sports. These features include physiological practices that contribute to the preservation of health, opportunities to expand the circle of friends and corresponding opportunities for socialization of the athlete, the formation and maintenance of the foundations of a healthy lifestyle in society. The results of the theoretical study made it possible to clarify the sociological approach to the concept of professional sports and expand ideas about the social nature of sports
