The article analyzes the formation of radio orienteering as a discipline of sports radio direction finding, determines the structure of competitive activity when passing a distance in radio orienteering. It has been established that when passing a competitive distance, athletes spend 85-95% of the total time on movement with orientation in the area, and only 5-15% is spent on a radio transmitter search itself. A promising direction in the development of radio orienteering, which makes it possible to make this discipline more balanced, is seen in the saturation of the competitive exercise with more complex technical and tactical actions and techniques, including using powerful radio transmitters (radio beacons) operating in a short cycle in the search program
