Within the framework of the study, the preferences of first-year students in relation to sports were studied, in particular, the popularity of sports, the presence of sports qualifications among students, the choice of a sport within the framework of academic classes in the discipline "Physical Culture". Research methods: analysis of scientific literature data, questionnaires, statistical methods. Research results and conclusions. The conducted research allows us to state that about 60% of 1st-year students of KubSTU before entering the university had experience in systematic sports, while only 4.8% of them are qualified athletes; the most popular sports for training in the discipline "Physical Culture" among first-year students of KubSTU are game sports; as a result of the study, a sufficiently high degree of coincidence of those sports that students were engaged in earlier with those types that they expressed a desire to engage in within the framework of the discipline "Physical Culture" was established; the use of a sports-oriented approach in the process of physical education of students is limited by the availability of the material and technical base of the university
