The article is devoted to the problem of student sports in the system of work of organizations of higher professional education. The student sports movement is a separate link of sports growth in Russian and world sports. The article analyzes the state of development of physical culture and student sports in universities of the Samara and Volgograd regions, it identifies the main problems and areas of improvement. The authors concluded that the current system of physical education in institutions of higher professional education is imperfect, since it does not fully fulfill the social order of the state to ensure the health, general and special professional and applied readiness of students for full-fledged life, for the proper performance of their professional duties and the protection of the Fatherland. The authors see the solution to this problem in close cooperation between the teacher and the student through additional sports activities that are not included in the learning process at the university
