This article examines the speed characteristics of the triple jump as well as vertical and horizontal speed in triple jumpers. The aim of the study is to determine the role of vertical and horizontal speed characteristics in the triple jump. In the measurement of indicators, the methods of analysis of the data obtained in special scientific sources and comparison with the main characteristics in triple jumpers at the preparatory stage of training are used. The results of the obtained research data confirm the theory about the lack of attention of coaches to the indicators of speed characteristics of the triple jump, as well as the role of measuring vertical and horizontal speed in triple jumpers. The difficulty of measuring the speed characteristics of the triple jump and the role of measuring vertical and horizontal speed in triple jumpers is the main reason why this method of observation is rarely used in sports practice. This technique can determine the causes of decreased performance of triple jumpers and is recommended for use in the preparatory stage of athletes' training
