The article presents a study on the influence of mass media on the popularization of sports. The achievements of Russian athletes in the international arena motivate children and adults to engage in sports, as well as increase the number of active fans and experts in their favorite sports. The mass media are equal participants in major sporting events. Modern technological capabilities of mass media contribute to demonstrating the values of sports to a wide audience and are the most valuable tools of mass communication. The article examines the content of sports media communication, its main directions, structure, place and role in the popularization of sports and athletes. A comparative analysis of the information sources used to popularize handball in Russia and European countries has been carried out.
