There is a point of view, proven in the last century, about the mutual positive influence of physical activity on mental activity. The question of the effect of muscle work on mental performance has been well studied. Numerous studies have found that muscle loads can have an impact on subsequent mental activity. But the effect of mental stress on physical performance is less studied. The purpose of the study: to determine the influence of mental work on the physical performance of 1st-year students engaged in the discipline "Physical culture and sports" and sports specializations in mini-football (1st year of study) from universities of the Samara and Volgograd regions. When conducting the study, the authors relied on the result of the PWC170 functional test, which was used to determine the level of physical performance in different periods of the academic year. The results obtained in the course of research indicate a great stability of physical performance among regularly training students in different periods of the academic year. However, the level of physical performance was also successful in the group engaged in the physical culture and sports program. At the same time, physical performance, as the experiment showed, has a certain decrease in the examination period in both groups. According to the authors, the decrease in PWC 170 indicators during the examination periods is due to a decrease in motor activity, as well as the influence of intense mental activity and the pronounced influence of the heightened emotional state of students
