The development of Olympic sports and the Olympic movement in the 60-70s of the XX century required an increase in international sports contacts, including competitions of the highest level. The solution to this problem in cross-country skiing was the organization and holding of annual multi-stage competitions held by the International Ski Federation (FIS) and called the FIS cross-country World Cup. The first official tournament of the World Cup took place in the 1981/82 season. The competitions immediately took a leading place in the international calendar of cross-country skiing competitions and became annual. Soviet and Russian ski-racers competed on equal terms with representatives of the countries of northern and central Europe in the fight for high places, both in individual races and in the overall standings
