The problems caused by the limited time available for sports outside of school hours are becoming increasingly relevant these days. This topic seems to be relevant for specialists in various fields of science. The article analyzes from an interdisciplinary point of view the characteristic features of the lifestyle of student youth and the degree of inclusion of sports in the independent work of students. The purpose of the study is to study the indicators of the inclusion of sports in the independent work of students to stimulate the rational use of this time, thereby increasing their ability to achieve an improvement in the quality of life. Students of the Rostov State Transport University took part in the study. a total of 311 students, aged 18-19, with a representative gender representation: 183 boys and 128 girls. The questionnaire used included 23 questions. Our study revealed the fact that many of the university students lead a sedentary lifestyle, 34.38% of them do not go in for sports, which leads to negative consequences, more than half of the students, 54.98%, have violations of functional systems. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that it is necessary to revise the programs of higher education in physical culture and sports with the aim of increasing the hours of contact work of the teacher with students, as well as the development of recreational training programs aimed at stimulating students to engage in physical exercises.
