The article analyzes the main approaches to understanding the essence of the process of personality adaptation, presents a generalization of the existing theoretical and methodological ideas about adaptation in various fields of science. The purpose of the study is to conduct a literature review that reflects the main directions in determining the processes of personality adaptation. Among the various definitions of the phenomenon of adaptation presented in the scientific literature, there are objectively several of its main manifestations, which allow us to assert that adaptation is, firstly, a property of the organism, and secondly, the process of adaptation to changing environmental conditions, the essence of which is to achieve simultaneous balance between the environment and the organism, thirdly, the result of interaction in the "man-environ-ment" system, and fourthly, the goal towards which the organism strives. Thus, adaptation is the elimination or weakening of the harmful effects of environmental factors (biological, physiological, social, psychological) environment, which helps the individual to achieve harmony between the internal and external conditions of life and activity, harmonize their own requirements and claims with the objective conditions of human life.
