The study focuses on determining the level of strength abilities of the students of the Perm State Pharmaceutical Academy (PSFA) in All-Russian physical culture and sports complex “Ready for Labour and Defence”. Research objectives are to: 1) estimate the level of strength abilities of students of PSFA; 2) to determine the preferences of students when choosing mandatory strength exercises; 3) to propose the methods to improve the efficiency of the training process. The study involved 254 students. The participation in the Festivals of the GTO is a motivation for students for systematic physical culture and sports and a healthy lifestyle. Conclusions: The level of strength abilities of PSFA students was determined: 64.2% of the participants coped with the standards of GTO. It is found that young women were more successful than young men when meeting the standards of GTO. However, one third of the females and almost half of the males could not meet the mandatory strength standard. At the same time, a significant part of the attempts were not counted due to improper exercise technique. When choosing strength exercises, young men preferred flexion and extension movements of arms in a lying position while young women preferred pull-ups on the low crossbar. The systematic strength exercises during classroom sessions and in self-training as well as learning the correct exercise technique are required.
