The article examines the current state of Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) students' attitudes towards physical education classes, the leading factors negatively affecting motivation were identified, the motivational structure of the attitude of students of the training department "Athletics" was clarified. As a result of the questionnaire it was found that physical education and sports as a sphere of activity, which has a detached attitude to them, and physical education and sports as an educational subject coexist in the minds of students. The attitude to the first is generally accepting, valuable, to the second - less accepting. In the hierarchy of the management structure of students' physical education the teacher of a higher education institution is at the lowest level of the hierarchy of possibilities to influence objectively the positive result in solving the problem of motivation. In this regard, it should be recognized that the teacher's activity is not determining, but only contributing to this task, i.e. there are no "magic" pedagogical methods capable of solving this problem independently.
