The article examines issues related to the study of the attitude of students to scientific work in higher educational institutions, as well as the assessment of motivation for scientific activity. 238 respondents from different courses of study were interviewed in the form of a questionnaire (questionnaire "Satisfaction of students of the Northern Trans-Urals with the organization of research"), and the method of participant observation for the period 2020-2023 was also applied. The study made it possible to reveal that attracting students to participate in scientific conferences, student olympiads, competitions with the publication of the results of scientific work has a positive effect on the motives of students' scientific activity. Motivation to engage in scientific activities is promoted by teachers of professional departments. Students in 84.8% are not motivated or are poorly motivated for research activities at the university. Creative thinking is considered an important basis for professional activity by 97% of young researchers
