The purpose of the study is to provide a scientific and theoretical substantiation of situational technique as a conditioned tactical necessity in the long‑term training of handball players. Research methods: theoretical analysis and generalization of literary sources, and a coach survey in the form of a questionnaire were used. Research results and conclusions. It was revealed that the presence of a connection between theoretical knowledge and the ability to orient oneself in the game environment is the beginning of successful and high‑quality mastery of game techniques in the process of tactical and technical training. The algorithm for acquiring knowledge about typical game situations and the ability to classify them should be regulated by specific classification criteria. The long‑term process of tactical and technical training of handball players can be represented as a vector of the sequence of solving target goals at each stage of the formation of sports mastery. It was established that the formation of theoretical knowledge and skills of handball players to quickly orient themselves in typical game situations involves a constant search for solutions to game situations in the following sequence: mastering typical game situations, developing the ability to solve typical game situations using previously unknown methods, and independently searching for the most optimal solutions in typical game situations.
