The Army of the Russian Federation needs a well-trained military reserve. Today, young people of military age can get a military specialty, without leaving home and specialized training, in a military training center. As part of the study, the level of speed of students entering the university in 2021-2023 was compared. Purpose: to identify the level of speed of students. To do this, the following research methods were used: analysis of scientific and methodological literature, the method of control exercises, methods of mathematical statistics. We found that the number of applicants is growing, it has doubled in two years. However, the number of applicants and those who came to submit standards is less than half. The authors attribute this to the young age of applicants. Analyzing the protocols of passing exercise No. 41, it can be seen that every fourth student cannot run 100 meters faster than 15.4 seconds. Candidates for training coped with the selection criterion for physical quality "speed" best in 2023, 351 people from those who came to the change, which corresponds to 90%. The level of development of speed is low. The data obtained will help the university administration to prevent low enrollment in the university, take measures to increase the physical fitness of students
