Topical problems of the formation of an effective social institution of professionalization of sports require obtaining information about the forms of interaction between athletes and public institutions, such as professional federations, clubs, sponsors, etc. The purpose of the article is to determine the form and intensity of interaction between professional athletes and public institutions. A survey was used as a research method, the number of respondents was 101 people belonging to the category of professional athletes at various stages of their professional careers. The data obtained as a result of the study indicate that the assistance received by professional athletes from institutional participants primarily concerns equipment, financing participation in competitions, and solving problems with housing at the stage of developing a sports career. Institutional participation at the end of a sports career is mainly concerned with the employment of a former athlete. The conclusions obtained as a result of the study allow us to determine the degree of institutional participation in the formation of a professional athlete
