The article considers the specifics of empathic abilities of students in the process of studying at a medical university. The theoretical analysis showed that medical workers belong to the group of helping professions, therefore they need a certain level of development of empathic abilities to provide high-quality professional care to patients. The empirical sample consisted of students of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education Ryazan State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of Russia in the specialty 31.05.01 “General Medicine” in the amount of 103 people. The purpose of the study was to study the characteristics of students' empathic abilities and the possibilities for their development during their studies at a medical university. In accordance with the relevance and purpose of the study, we selected the following methods and techniques that made up the psychodiagnostic tools: 1) emotional response scale (A. Mehrabyan and N. Epstein); 2) diagnostics of emotional intelligence (N. Hall); 3) diagnostics of the level of empathy (VV Boyko). The results of the study will improve the knowledge and understanding of the psychological characteristics of empathic abilities among medical students among teachers of higher medical educational institutions, which will allow optimizing work with them
