The article presents the results of the authors' research on identifying the factors determining the need to use small groups to prepare specialists in the field of physical education for passing the candidate exam in a foreign language. These factors include: the presence of general special terminology in a foreign language; preferential focus of training on the formation of the same communication skills in a foreign language; broader possibilities for higher-quality learning of a foreign language when teaching in small groups. Significant factors are also: the need to "equalize" communication skills in a foreign language, based on the individual capabilities of specialists; increased motivation to learn skills of communication in a foreign language when studying in small groups and the desire of specialists in the field of physical culture to achieve high results in knowledge of a foreign language
