The main criterion for the effectiveness of running technique for medium and long distances is the high efficiency of running movements, which can be indirectly assessed by several kinetic indicators. The purpose of the study is to determine kinematic characteristics as criteria for running technique that help reduce energy costs and increase sports performance. Research organization methods. The work was carried out based on systematization of experimental data from the examination of the world's strongest athletes, previously obtained using biomechanical filming, tensodynamometry, mathematical modeling, as well as analysis of materials from scientific articles. Results of the study and their discussion. It was revealed that the running of the strongest athletes is characterized by a smaller amount of mechanical work performed to move the body links and the center of mass of the body during the run, which is determined by: the magnitude of the vertical oscillations of the body, the amplitude of the speed oscillations in the longitudinal direction, the landing speed of the foot at the time of setting, the amplitude of the swing movements hips, the position of the body at the moment of repulsion and placing the foot on the support. Conclusions. The main criterion for running technique for medium and long distances is the indicator of running economy - the energy cost of a meter of distance.
