The article examines the problem of the imbalance between the number of technical-tactical actions performed by football players aged 15–17 and the quality of their execution, due to the fact that, because of rapid growth, the physical fitness indicators of young footballers (strength, endurance, speed) outpace the development of coordination abilities and skills of voluntary self-regulation. The purpose of the study is to scientifically substantiate the development of coordination abilities and voluntary self-regulation skills in football players aged 15–17. Research methods and organization. The research methods included five specific tests to assess the coordination abilities and technical skills of football players. Additionally, four psychodiagnostic techniques were used. In 2025, a study was conducted at the RUS «GTSOLIFK» and at the sports school holding sessions at the "Sokolniki" branch of the Spartak Academy, involving football players aged 15–17, both those with a 1st sports category qualification and those without any sports ranking. Research results and conclusions. A gap has been identified between coaches' subjective assessments and the objective indicators of athletes' cognitive skills. This determines the necessity of comprehensive development of cognitive skills and voluntary self-regulation in adolescent football players, based on the objective indicators of the target level of cognitive skill development in young footballers.
