The article deals with the problem of the development of special endurance of freestyle swimmers aged 13-14 years, specializing in middle-distance swimming at the stage of sports specialization. It was assumed that the widespread use of the method of variable-continuous exercise, combining short-term phases of significant local acidification with subsequent, relatively long phases of work in the aerobic-developing zone of intensity, will stimulate powerful mechanisms of rapid utilization of lactate, which is the basis for increasing special endurance in middle-distance swimming. In the course of the experiment, the effectiveness of the predominant use of the variable-continuous exercise method at the specially preparatory stage of training middle-distance swimmers in comparison with the interval method used in the control group was confirmed. This was reflected in a significant improvement in the indicators of special endurance in the aerobic-anaerobic power zone of the participants of the experimental group, as well as the best results of the athletes of the experimental group at a competitive distance of 200 meters freestyle
