The purpose of the research is to evaluate the effectiveness of the changes made in the content of the work program of the academic discipline "Theory and methodology of teaching the basic kinds of sports (Gymnastics)" (hereinafter - TMTBKS (Gymnastics)), implemented in the preparation of students in the direction 49.03.01 "Physical Training", profile "Physical Education". Methods and organization of the research. The research was done in 2020-2022 at the Voronezh State Academy of Sports (hereinafter - VSAS) and included two stages. At the first stage at the end of the 2020-21 the professional competence of 1st year students of the VSAS (n= 19) was assessed based on the results of their mastering of the academic discipline TMTBKS (Gymnastics) according to the original version of the work program. At the second stage of the research at the end of the 2021-22 the professional competence of the 1st year students of the VSAS (n=26) was assessed based on the results of mastering of the academic discipline TMTBKS (Gymnastics) according to the adjusted version of the work program. Changes to the program were made based on the data obtained at the first stage of the research. Pedagogical experiment, testing, control tests, mathematical and statistical data processing, analysis, generalization and systematization were used as the main research methods. Results of the research. Based on the results of the assessment of the professional competence of 1st year students of the VSAS at the end of the 2020-21 the level of their theoretical and practical competence in the discipline TMTBKS (Gymnastics) was assessed as satisfactory, the level of methodological competence -as low. Detailing the data obtained in the course of testing made it possible to substantiate the key directions for correcting the work program, the essence of which is as follows: redistribution of academic hours by class type and schedule of the discipline; supplementing the content and forms of presentation of educational material (including interactive ones); concretization and regulation of individual work of students; development of methodological support for remote learning of the discipline's fragments; detailing of knowledge, assimilation control (including the performance of assignments in the hours of individual work of a student). The results of the assessment of the professional competence of 1st year students of the VSAS at the end of the 2021-22 showed the effectiveness of the adjustments made. At the same time, the preservation of several insufficiently formed aspects of the competence of students outlined the prospects for further improvement of the program in the academic discipline TMTBKS (Gymnastics). Conclusion. The conducted research showed the prospects of the applied approach to the correction of the work program of the discipline TMTBKS (Gymnastics), implemented in the preparation of students in the direction 49.03.01 "Physical Training", profile "Physical Education", and outlined the direction of further pedagogical work in this problem area
